Headliner Removal/Installation

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations and the precautions and procedures before performing repairs or service.

  • Use the handy remover set, or equivalent when prying components.
  • Take care not to bend or scratch the headliner.
  • Be careful not to damage the dashboard and other interior trim and panels.

1.Remove these items:

2.From both sides, using a trim tool, release the tabs (A), then remove the sunvisor cap (B) from the bracket (C). Turn the cap, and remove it.


3.From both sides, remove the sunvisor (A) and holder (B).

-1 Remove the self-tapping ET screws.
-2 Remove the sunvisor from the body and holder.
-3 Using a flat-tip screwdriver, push the hook (C), and turn the holder 90°, then pull it out.


4.Remove the roof console (A).

-1 Remove the lens (B).
-2 With U/S intrusion sensor: Pry up on the front edge of the roof console trim (C) with a trim pad tool to release the hooks (D), then remove the cover.
-3 Remove the screws.
-4 Disconnect the front individual map light connector (E), and if equipped, disconnect the ultrasonic sensor connector (F).

5.Without side curtain airbags: Remove the caps (A), and remove the screws, then remove the grab handles (B) (driver's and each passenger's).


6.With side curtain airbags: Lower the grab handle, then pry out the lid (A). Remove the self-tapping ET screws, then remove the grab handle (B). Remove the remaining grab handles.


7.If equipped, remove the caps (A), and remove the bolts, then remove the inner roof rails (B) from both sides.


8.If equipped, remove the cap (A) from the center seat belt retractor cover (B).


9.With the help of an assistant, remove the headliner (A). LHD is shown, RHD is similar.

-1 Remove the remaining both front door opening trim (B), both rear door opening trim (C) and tailgate weatherstrip (D) from roof portion.
-2 With sunroof: Remove the roof trim (E).
-3 Detach the clip (F), and release the fasteners (G) by pulling the rear portion of the headliner down. Take care not to damage the headliner.
-4 Lower the headliner, and disconnect the sunroof connector (H) (with sunroof). Take care not to damage the interior wire harness (I).


10.With the help of an assistant, remove the cushion tape, then remove the interior wire harness (A) from the headliner (B). Take care not to damage the headliner and interior wire harness.

For LHD with sunroof

11.Remove the headliner through the tailgate opening.
Take care not to damage the headliner.

12.If equipped with the anchors, remove the anchor cover bracket (A), then remove the anchor cover (B) from the headliner.


13.If equipped with a center seat belt retractor, remove the speed nuts (A), and remove the cushion tape (B), then remove the retractor cover bracket (C) and retractor cover (D) from the headliner.


14.Without side curtain airbags: Using a clip remover, detach the clips (A, B), then remove the front roof side pad (C) and rear roof side pad (D).


15.With side curtain airbags: Remove the grab rail bracket (A).

-1 Remove the bolts (B, C), and release the hooks (D).
-2 Release the hook (E) from the bracket.


16.Install the headliner in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

  • If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, replace the headliner and the grab handles on deployed side with new ones.
  • To prevent the side curtain airbag from accidentally deploying, being damaged when deploying, and injuring persons when deploying, removed trim pieces should be checked for these kinds of damage:
    • Any creases or tear in the headliner (A)
    • Any fasteners (B) or clip base (C) which have come off the headliner
    • Any damage around the grab handle holes (D) or sunvisor holes (E) in the headliner
    • Any deformations in the grab handle (F)
    • Any deformations in the grab handle bracket (G)
    • Any cracks in the sunvisor stay base (H)
    • Any bends or cracks in the sunvisor stay shaft (I)
    • Any cracks in the sunvisor base (J)
    • Any cracks in the vanity mirror base (K)
  • Replace any damaged parts with new ones.
  • Make sure the top of the headliner overlaps with the trim pieces correctly.
  • When passing the headliner through the door opening, be careful not to fold or bend it. Also, be careful not to scratch the body.
  • Check that both sides of the headliner are securely attached to the trim.
  • With sunroof: When reinstalling the roof trim (L), install the joint (M) as shown.
