Fuel and Emissions System Description

Electronic Control System


The functions of the fuel and emission control systems are managed by the engine control module (ECM).

Self-diagnosis

The ECM detects a failure of a signal from a sensor or from another control unit and stores a temporary DTC or a permanent DTC in the erasable memory (RAM). Depending on the failure, permanent DTC is stored whether in the first or the second drive cycle. When a permanent DTC is stored, the ECM indicates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) by supplying ground to the MIL circuit.


Fail-safe Function

When an abnormality occurs in the signal from a sensor or from another control unit, the ECM ignores that signal and assumes a pre-programmed value for them and allows the engine to continue running. DTC is stored at this time and MIL come on.

MIL Bulb Check

When the ignition switch is first turned ON (II), the ECM supplies ground to the MIL circuit and indicate it for about 2 seconds to check the bulb condition.

Diesel Engine Management System


Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor

As the accelerator pedal position changes, the sensor varies the signal voltage to the ECM.

 

Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Clutch Relay

When the engine control module (ECM) receives a demand for cooling from the A/C system, it delays the compressor from being energized, and enriches the mixture to assure smooth transition to the A/C mode.

Alternator Control

The alternator signals the ECM during charging.

Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor

The BARO sensor is inside the ECM. It converts atmospheric pressure into a voltage signal that modifies the basic duration of the fuel injection discharge.

Brake Pedal Position Switch

The brake pedal position switch signals the ECM when the brake pedal is pressed.

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor

The CMP sensor detects the angle of camshaft as a reference for sequential fuel injection to each cylinder.

 

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

The CKP sensor detects engine speed and determines ignition timing and timing for fuel injection of each cylinder.

 

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

The ECT sensor is a temperature dependent resistor (thermistor). The resistor of the thermistor decreases as the engine coolant temperature increases.

 

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor/Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2

IAT sensor 2 is a temperature dependant resistor (thermistor). The resistance of the thermistor decreases as the intake air temperature increases.

The MAP sensor converts manifold absolute pressure into electrical signals to the ECM.

 

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor/Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1

The MAF sensor contains hot wire and a thermistor. It is located in the intake air passage. The resistance of the hot wire and thermistor change due to intake air temperature and air flow. The control circuit in the MAF sensor controls the current to keep the hot wire at a set temperature. The current is coverted to voltage in the control circuit, then output to the ECM.

 

Vacuum Pump

Because the vacuum is not produced on the diesel engine, the vacuum pump is driven by the cam chain to produce the vacuum.

 

Fuel Supply System


The fuel from the fuel tank is pressured by the fuel pump and is accumulated in the common rail. Fuel injection timing and injection amount are controlled precisely by the ECM by sending the signal to the electromagnetic valve of each fuel injector.

Glow Relay Control

It controls the timing and duration when the glow plug control module is electrically ON at the engine start in accordance with the coolant temperature.

 

Fuel Filter Water Level Switch

Fuel filter water level switch is installed fuel filter. This switch detects water level in the fuel filter.

 

Fuel Heater

Fuel heater is installed fuel filter.
This system is designed to prevent deposition of the wax elements in the fuel when the ambient temperature is extremely low.

 

Fuel Injector

Compact and energy-saving electromagnetic valve control type of the injectors are adopted on this model. Separate IQA code is given for each fuel injector, which allows much accurate fuel injection by controlling the fuel injection of each injector based on the respective injection performances.

 

Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Sensor

The FRP sensor detects the fuel pressure in the common rail.

 

Fuel Temperature Sensor

The fuel temperature sensor is installed fuel filter. The fuel temperature sensor is a temperature dependent resistor (thermistor). The resistance of the thermistor decreases as the fuel temperature increases.

 

PGM-FI Main Relay 1 and 2

PGM-FI main relay 1 is energized whenever the ignition switch is ON (II) which supplies battery voltage to the ECM, and power for PGM-FI main relay 2.

Fuel Pump

Fuel pump draws adequate amount of the fuel and sends the high pressured fuel to the common rail.

 

Intake Air System


Intake Manifold Runnner Control (IMRC)

The IMRC valve is designed for stable combustion in low speed range by opening and closing the IMRC valve. The IMRC valve opens and closes producing the gap of the flow rate between the swirl port and the secondary port, and thereby it controls the swirl volume.

 

Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Position Sensor

The IMRC position sensor detects the IMRC valve angle.

 

Turbo Boost Charger

The variable nozzle type turbo charger is adopted on this model.
It controls the back pressure and supercharged pressure in optimum balance for the engine speed and load by opening and closing the variable nozzle located on the circumference of the turbine and by adjusting the flow speed and pressure of the exhaust gas that are input in the turbocharger.

 

Catalytic Converter System


Catalytic Converter

Two types of the catalyst that are different in purification performance are combined; a type that is for both of the oxidation performance at low temperature and the NOx purification performance and another type that is mainly for the NOx purification performance.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System

EGR Valve

The EGR valve lowers peak combustion temperatures and reduces oxides of nitrogen emissions (NOx) by recirculating exhaust gas through the intake manifold and into the combustion chambers.

 

EGR Cooler

The EGR cooler is equipped on this model to reduce the NOx.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Diagram


The EGR system reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by recirculating exhaust gas through the EGR valve and the intake manifold into the combustion chambers. The ECM memory includes the ideal EGR valve position for varying operating conditions.
