DTC Troubleshooting: P2017 (178-4)

DTC P2017:  IMRC Valve Position Sensor Circuit High Voltage

1.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

2.Check the IMRC VALVE POSITION SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS.

Is about 4.90 V or higher indicated?


YES - Go to 3.


NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the IMRC valve position sensor and the ECM.n


3.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

4.Disconnect the IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector.

5.Connect IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector terminals No. 2 and No. 3 with a jumper wire.

 

6.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

7.Check the IMRC VALVE POSITION SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS.

Is about 4.90 V or higher indicated?


YES - Go to 8.


NO - Go to 19.

8.Measure voltage between IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2.

 

Is there about 5 V?


YES - Go to 9.


NO - Go to 14.


9.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 30 seconds.

10.Remove the jumper wire from the IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector.

11.Disconnect ECM connector No. 1 (96P).

12.Connect IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector terminal No. 2 to body ground with a jumper wire.

 

13.Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 16 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 26.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the IMRC valve position sensor and ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 16, then go to 21.


14.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 30 seconds.

15.Remove the jumper wire from the IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector.

16.Disconnect ECM connector No. 1 (96P).

17.Connect IMRC valve position sensor 3P connector terminal No. 3 to body ground with a jumper wire.

 

18.Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 57 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 26.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the IMRC valve position sensor and ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 57, then go to 21.


19.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

20.Replace the IMRC valve assembly.

21.Reconnect all connectors.

22.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

23.Reset the ECM with the HDS.

24.Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 2,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

25.Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated?


YES - If DTC P2017 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the IMRC valve position sensor and the ECM, then go to 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.


NO - Troubleshooting is complete.n

26.Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM.

27.Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 2,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

28.Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated?


YES - If DTC P2017 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the IMRC valve position sensor and the ECM, then go to 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.


NO - If the ECM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the ECM was substituted, replace the original ECM.n
